The Learning Well Method is captured by the mnemonic

‘Learning Steps Know It Works’

The Method is set out below in four steps:

1) Whatever you are LEARNING

2) Take the Action STEPS to learn

3) Test by Asking do you KNOW IT?

4) And, do what WORKS

Remember the mnemonic:

‘Learning Steps Know It Works’

Explanation of the 4 steps:

1) Learning

Here you will be learning the Times Tables.

We have made it as simple and enjoyable as possible. Your child will really want to learn the Times Tables.

2) Action Steps

We provide a simple, step-by-step approach, guiding you to on how to help your child use the gift of amazing memory.

3) Do you know it?

The essence of the ‘do you know it’ step is:

No failure, only results.

The testing process is about gaining feedback and learning fast (instead of criticising).

4) Do what works

This step is a practical approach, it looks at what works. Then you put it into practice, making it a habit.

And always remember to ‘make it fun, then you’ve won!’

Listen to Tony Lazar’s view on how this affects a child’s progress through school:

Key Points

Seventeen out of the twenty five players were born in January, February, March and April.

The same pattern occurred throughout the National Hockey League and the Ontario Junior Hockey League.

He found that in any elite group of hockey players that around 70% were born between January and June. But why?

Because there is a January 1st cut off date for selection. This means that a boy born in January is directly competing against a boy born in December. The boy born in January therefore has the advantage of a years diference in growth over the boy born in December. The point is that Boys born earlier in the year have an advantage over those born in the latter part of the year because of the arbitary cut off date for selection of the 1st January and they are therefore more likely to be selected because they are on average stronger and faster.

This same pattern is seen in our education systems only with a different cut off date. In the UK and in many countries the cut of date is the September 1st which means that the nearer a child is born to this date the more of an age advantage they have and therefore the more of a developmental advantage they have over children born later in the academic year.

What benefits do those born in the earlier in the academic year have? Children born earlier have the advantage of age, maturity and size?

They are more likely to be:

Selected for plays

Volunteering for to speak more often

Chosen for responsibility

Chosen as leaders

Achieving higher grades

Excelling in school teams

Streamed in higher groups

Achieve higher self-esteem.

What advantages are the those born later in the academic year missing out on?

The education system has certainly dealt the younger children a big disadvantage and this begs the question;

What can you as a parent do?

Complaining about the system is of no use. However, you can do something about this and give your child the edge through giving them time, communicating to them the best learning techniques, and building their confidence.

This Blog is all about helping you give your children the best learning techniques, whenever in the year they were born, and this includes help with their Maths. So now you know the connection between Ice Hockey and Maths.

Tables are traditionally things that have been learnt a certain way over the years.

People know they can learn their tables, but these are taught to us in a rote fashion, and to get them right takes a long time and a lot of effort. This means learning multiplication tables is slow, unproductive, and involves too much thinking, as we are taught them in a linear fashion.

For example schools still teach times tables by getting children to read or say them out loud repeatedly, or using some another form of repetition such as this:

1 x 2 = 2

2 x 2 = 4

3 x 2 = 6

This is rote learning and there is a much better and far easier way for your children to learn the tables! How?

You can learn the tables by rote and most of us do, however, the problem is that as you are learning them in an auditory fashion, this means you read them in a linear way – from 1 x to 10 x.The tables are therefore stored in your brain in the same linear way, and their recall is also linear so you can end up going through all of them to get to your answer.

If you ask a child having learnt it this way what 6 x 6 is, they will often go through the tables 3 x 6, 4 x 6 to get to the answer – I know that my daughters and son did! If the effort to recall was too much for them, they simply stopped.

If you do recall in this linear way you can get the right answer but as you can imagine, it takes a lot of time and a lot of effort to learn the tables this way.

Now you would think that if you answere a tables question 20 times then you should know answer instantly, but it does not work like that. If it took you more than a fraction of a second to come to the answer , then you have used the linear method to extract the answer – you had to think about it.

A child will usually go through the same process repeatedly to get the right answer. This is not using your memory in the most productive way.

What is needed is a method that will give you an instant answer.

There are better techniques to learn your tables using Memory Sheets which utilise the way your memory works and result in instant recall of the tables with little effort and the effort that is put in is interesting and fun and not boring like the rote learning method. Wouldn’t a fun method be better for your children?

You can find out more about the instant recall method of learning tables from this Blog and our reports.

As grown ups, we have already learned our tables, however, we can make a huge difference to our children and their abilities.

Please do stop rote learning times tables as it only holds your children back and makes learning boring rather than fun and very easy.

By using Memory Sheets your children will love learning their tables and they will learn to love maths and numeracy as it will all be so much easier for them.

There really is a better way by using Memory Sheets as these teach the tables so that your children have instant recall without having to think what the answer is!
