How much time does your child spend at school?
This is a question we, as parents, may never ask ourselves. Our children go to school 5 days a week. It seems like a big chunk of their lives. Does it matter? You may be surprised or even shocked by looking at the facts. It certainly is something parents should be aware of.
In the UK schools must open for 380 half-day sessions in each school year which is a minimum of 190 days. So if we compare this with school days in other countries:
- America 180 days
- Australia 198 days
- Israel 216 days
- South Korea 220 days
- Japan 240 days
Parents may be expecting these sorts of results and think that this is nothing out of the ordinary or be surprised by the disparity of school days in different countries.
What I would like to do now is look at the time spent in school as a percentage of children’s lives looking at primary aged children. So children spend 6 hours a day at school. Children sleep on average 10 hours a day.
- School hours 190 (days) x 6 hours = 1140 hours.
- Waking hours 365 x 14 = 5110 hours
= 22%
So the percentage of children’s lives spent at school is just over 22% not more than 1/5th of their lives. If you now do this for lesson time as a percentage for:
- 5 – 7 year olds it is 15%
- 8 – 11 year olds it is l6%.
So for every 15 hours spent in the classroom they spend 85 hours not studying.

We highly recommend the “little & often” approach when working with your children. This approach is effective and allows you to be able to work with your child around your busy day by spending short bursts of time regularly.
